Hidden Treasure
Psalms 119:10-11
With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments.
Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
Whenever a treasure of great worth is discovered, there is this natural human tendency to preserve it, to hide it away in a place where it cannot be compromised or stolen. From Tom Sawyer to the Count of Monte Cristo to Pirates of the Caribbean, there are endless stories centered around a treasure that has been hidden away in the ground or the ocean. What is interesting about this treasure is the ends to which someone will go to acquire it and then the transformation that takes place in the life of the one who knows of its existence, sometimes even before they take possession of it. Just having the map with a mark indicating its location is enough to bring a light to the eye and a spring to the step of the one who believes they are destined to possess the treasure. They will do everything they can to protect it from anyone who might take it from them and then go to the ends of the world on a quest to possess it.
More than just a collection of incredibly accurate and divinely inspired writings, we have within the pages of our Bible the way to the most valuable treasure anyone has ever owned. There are directions here to the very heart of God, where the truth of who we were created to be and the fullness of all we were made to produce will result in much more than mere earthly riches and fame. The more His words are received into the heart as actual communication from the Father, the more they will be valued as the incomparable treasure they are, and the more they are valued, the more they will be preserved and kept from compromise. As they are hidden there in a heart that has become their shelter and their hiding place, any alternative or offer from an opposing voice or word will be seen as the threat that it is. It will be soundly and effectively rejected with a deep passionate desire to preserve the integrity of the treasure His Word has become to our life. The discovery of treasure and its secure placement in the heart is the privileged lifetime adventure of the one who has come to value His Word above any other.
