Psalms 32:8-9 KJV

(8)  I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.
(9)  Be ye not as the horse, or as the mule, which have no understanding: whose mouth must be held in with bit and bridle, lest they come near unto thee.

It seems looking back that I received some of my best musical instruction from my sister while playing the bass in church. She had this way of looking at me from the piano and communicating through her eyes how and whether or not I should be playing at the moment. Since then I’ve had other relationships in which I’ve been told that I myself communicate a great deal through my eyes. A close friend I grew up with and with whom I spent my freshman year in college, along with and especially my wife, Kim, have let me know that I am quite transparent when it comes to what mood I happen to be in and what my preferences might be at the moment. For those that come to be our closest companions much more can be spoken through the eyes than just the voice because of the time spent looking into those eyes during various life experiences. The true feelings and intentions of the heart become more and more familiar the more intimate the relationship and often nothing need be spoken for the message to get across to the one who really cares.

God is ready to guide and instruct us in the way we should go. He knows exactly what direction and steps need to be taken. For us to rise above the response level of a horse or mule, however, there will need to be an intimacy with Him developed through a relationship that has spent much time looking into His eyes and not just listening for a statement or directive to be made. This is a very personal and direct communication that He wishes to impart and it will only be successfully given to the one who is receiving it as if from His eye, from having sought His face as a lifestyle. It would be so great to just have a writing on the wall, a mediator tell us, or a voice audibly instruct us, but the direction that will come from Him will need to come as though from His eye to the heart that is steadfastly focused on His face. As He is continually looking on us with care and understanding, it will only require a glance into those loving eyes for His direction to be given. His eye will show.
