Lucky

Psalms 32:1  A David psalm. Count yourself lucky, how happy you must be– you get a fresh start, your slate’s wiped clean.
Psalms 32:2  Count yourself lucky– GOD holds nothing against you and you’re holding nothing back from him.
(The Message)

For some reason this passage reminded me of a couple things to which I was exposed yesterday.

I had just got back in the van after unhooking the music equipment trailer, when a radio commercial let me know about a new method of winning a lottery. Not only could you win by matching the series of numbers, but if the sum of your numbers added up to a certain amount, you could also win. It really sounded like a pretty good deal, you know, a very significant increase in the miniscule probability of striking it rich – with just a little luck.

Then, there was this movie that I watched briefly until falling asleep, where it was said in a conversation that odds are like gravity, they’re unavoidable in their pull towards that lucky (or in this case unlucky) moment.

Obsessed with luck and a drive to somehow let ‘gravity’ bring a favored day of blessed winnings, there are many that expend small fortunes in an attempt to finally be that ‘winner’ that gets to experience the blessing and favor of the ‘lucky’. Sometimes it is seen as something that is almost cosmic as a certain day or period of time is seen as the planets and stars all lining up to support the ‘luck’ factor of some fortunate soul. Black cats and cracks will be intensely avoided to make certain that the possibilities for luck’s favor not be cursed or disallowed. This mysterious, yet numbers driven element of ‘luck’ or good ‘fortune’ or ‘favor’ is something that will definitely define the person who has found themselves in a state of ‘faults forgiven’ and ‘benefits provided’. He or she will be seen as one of the ‘lucky’ ones, set apart for possibly unearned or undeserved fortune and acceptance.

It is so good to give in to gravity’s pull and find yourself standing securely on the Rock of Ages, where there is no air between and no guilt or misfortune veiling ‘most favored status’ with the Redeemer. When nothing you could ever have done has brought you here, and you really should probably be paying dearly for misdeeds and errors of the past, you can consider yourself no less than incredibly ‘lucky’ to be experiencing this ‘alignment of the stars’. Once this kind of favor has been realized, there is an enhanced desire to acquire and possess this blessing ever more, and you will find yourself taking every opportunity to expend whatever resources necessary to be there for every drawing from the blessing hat. All thoughts, attitudes and actions will find themselves captive to this passion for disallowing anything that might curse and compromise what can only be seen as the undeserved and unmerited favor of the Holy One.

The consideration of the ‘lucky’ before God is one of incredible gratitude and commitment to servitude to the favor.
