Trial
Judges 6:39 And Gideon said unto God, Let not thine anger be hot against me, and I will speak but this once: let me prove, I pray thee, but this once with the fleece; let it now be dry only upon the fleece, and upon all the ground let there be dew.
God’s on trial. Doesn’t quite seem right, but He doesn’t seem to get too upset about it either. In fact, I think maybe He was just looking for someone to let Him prove what He could really do. For some reason there are so many that have chosen to try other options in life for their answers, for their gratification, instead of the only really valid option. Also, in an effort to not appear faithless and unbelieving, I think it’s quite often that we do something far worse - we don’t even give Him a chance to prove Himself.
There is a display of “try mes” all around us that impacts our lives continually. We’re asked to try this new software, new dish soap, new video game, because it is believed that if their product can just be put on trial, it will be sold, it will be irresistible if only tried. Where there is a true belief in a product, there is a willingness and desire to be proven and tried, because no doubt there will be a victory on the other side of the trial. There was even a car recently that had a money back guarantee- if you weren’t pleased with it, you could get your money back after a trial period. The reason they give the trial period, though, is because sometimes it will take a little longer than just a test drive in order to get past the newness and become familiar with all the gadgets specific to the product. For software sometimes there is a significant learning curve that requires several days and maybe a few projects to really prove. To give one of these a reasonable trial, there must be a period given.
I believe God is looking to be fleeced today. I think He’s more than up for anything we can throw at Him, if we will but really give Him a try, not just what He can do. He wants to do all the demonstrations, miracles, and provisions, but giving Him a try is so much more than just seeing what He will do. He is looking to prove much more than an ability to make something uniquely wet or dry, He’s wanting to bring rain to a soul that has never felt a single drop and nourish it to health in His presence. He knows that if only given a real chance- in relationship and not just recitative- there will be acceptance of much more than a simple fix of this or that. There will be acceptance of eternal life that will touch every moment and every breath with the substance that has no equal and no competition.
My prayer and my passionate desire is that God would be tried today. Where walls have been erected to somehow preserve ‘independence’ and ‘personal freedom’, I pray that there would be access given to the Universe Maker to touch the needy parts of lives with His provision and so much more. His love, joy, and peace are just looking for an opportunity to occupy a trial period with something that will be much more than irresistible if only given a chance. Where apathy and indifference were prominent, there will be overwhelming inspiration, motivation and infatuation with Jesus, if only given a chance. Where sickness, depression, and oppression ruled, freedom will reign if God can only be tried according to His instruction manual. Where loneliness, discouragement, and failure blocked out the light of day, He will dispel all darkness when the light of His presence is let in.
There’s really nothing to lose. It’s a money back guarantee, all that junk will be given right back if so desired, but shouldn’t He at least get a chance to prove Himself?
