The End

Ezekiel 7:2 Also, thou son of man, thus saith the Lord GOD unto the land of Israel; An end, the end is come upon the four corners of the land.
:4 And mine eye shall not spare thee, neither will I have pity: but I will recompense thy ways upon thee, and thine abominations shall be in the midst of thee: and ye shall know that I am the LORD.

You’re pretty much at the mercy of the script writers. Whatever they determined, somewhere in their room long ago- this would be the ending you would get. Although the hero had led thousands into battle and though he may have done all he could to save the heroine, he was going to die. He had no choice. It was written in the script. And then, there are some movies that lead you to believe it’s over, (the screen fades with a collage of pictures) only to fade back in with the final ending. While the various endings can be gratifying as the goal of the writer is accomplished in an emotional manipulation, it’s a little bit like watching a rerun of a football game. It might be fun to see certain plays again, but the outcome has already been determined and you’re just watching what has already been eternally established. Wouldn’t it be cool to have an interactive ending, where you could determine the outcome when it came time for it. The whole thing ends just as you want it to. Then you could even watch it a few different times with a variance of ending experiences.

There is an ultimate end that has been established in the wisdom and perfect understanding of God. It is a conclusion that will involve all of mankind and creation itself. What is interesting for us about this ending, though, is that we get to be a part of writing our own part into those final moments. In every choice that is made and every opportunity taken to give in to righteousness, there is participation in determining whether or not our end will be a gratifying one or one of great disappointment. The composition period, that time in which the script is determined and imminently established, is a period that would appear to be insignificant and anything but volatile. It is however, the most critical time, that time of even apparent solitude when our every action is the stroke of the pen in the writing of our end.

God has committed Himself to ‘recompensing our ways’ upon us. He has offered the ultimate prize package for us with a perfect ending, but acquiring His best and most gratifying end will only come to those who have helped write it by the choices and actions that have confirmed and validated their true belief and love for the Father. It will never be enough to just say, “Lord, Lord”, but the good stuff will only go to those who have actually done His will. What’s great about His writing project, though, is that we can alter the ending right up to the very end. Even sometimes when it would appear that it’s already over- the screen fades with a collage of pictures- He can bring us back to life and one more chance to determine our ending.

The end is near. It might be good to develop some writer’s cramp-ensuring that our part of it isn’t eternally disappointing or destructive, but rather just as it would be most gratifying- at His side.
