To Believe

Mar 9:23 Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth. 24 And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.

So that’s all it takes, eh? Just believe and everything will be more than all right? No problem, I’ll just make a few adjustments and, shazaaam!, I’ll be right there enjoying all the bennies. Just tell me what to do, just tell me what to say and I know I can make it happen. I can really do some major believing.

If believing were just a matter of saying, “Oh, yeah, I believe”, there would surely be much more evidence of the power of believing all around us. There is a great deal shown, though, in the last phrase of this 24th verse. For belief to take place, the kind that really moves mountains and parts seas, there must be a realization that true believing is something that must be desperately sought after of the One in whom we would believe. One cannot expect to have much confidence towards someone that is just discovered in a book or on a recording. Singing a song about them or writing a report alone, will not bring a level of belief that goes anywhere past the brain. For the heart to be engaged in believing there must be a commitment made to really knowing the One who would direct us to touch the water with a stick or put mud on a blind person’s eyes. As long as the focus is on the size of the mountain or the length of the ark building project, the heart will just respond with an opposing, “right”, to the impossibility in the way. If, however, there is an obsession with the One who can do anything, if He is our bread, our water, and the very air we breath, the presentation of an impossibility will only be met with an overwhelming belief in Him who is ever ready with overcoming power.
