Waiting Place Psa 110:1 A David prayer. The word of GOD to my Lord: "Sit alongside me here on my throne until I make your enemies a stool for your feet." Psa 110:2 You were forged a strong scepter by GOD of Zion; now rule, though surrounded by enemies! (The Message) It can be quite the overwhelming predicament to be surrounded by enemies that appear to be more than able to crush us in their grasp. The weight of life's challenges may be more than we can bear sometimes and it may be difficult to identify with the thought of victory over them. There can be a natural tendency to feel small and ill-equipped to stand against them, with a loss for where to go or what to do. I'm so glad, though, that there is a place for us to go to and occupy during these times that tempt us to despair. It may not be that there will be an instant appearance of victory according to natural observance of circumstances, but there is a place of instant access where there is freedom from the fear they would impose. Though there may be a period of time when their appearance is formidable, we are not without a place to go and find refuge from their dominance. This David prayer of Psalm 110 is in reference to Jesus, who was in the most difficult of challenges on His way to the cross. Though He possessed more than enough power to overcome His enemies as soon as they first opposed Him, He willingly gave in to their apparent victory in order to insure our place of dominance over them with Him. His purpose was complete, not in just gaining His own personal victory over His enemies, but in securing a place of victory for us with Him. Psa 110:3 Your people will freely join you, resplendent in holy armor on the great day of your conquest, Join you at the fresh break of day, join you with all the vigor of youth. Eph 2:6 Then he picked us up and set us down in highest heaven in company with Jesus, our Messiah. Eph 2:7 Now God has us where he wants us, with all the time in this world and the next to shower grace and kindness upon us in Christ Jesus. It is interesting that in Christ the enemies didn't necessarily go away, they just took their place as a footstool, something upon which feet might gain rest and comfort. When we occupy this place of peace provided for us in Christ, we have all the time in the world to experience the grace and kindness that is showered on us there. The presence of enemies no longer brings a sense of desperation and fear, but it now brings a definite sense of relaxation and repose as we are made sure of our place of dominance over them. Though there may indeed be a time when their appearance may be mighty, this time can be occupied with worship and fellowship with the One that causes us to know we are more than conquerors in Him. In allowing this to be our waiting place we can successfully go from being weighted down by the apparent power of our enemies to relaxing comfortably with our feet resting on them. Where their presence once brought anxiety and fear, it will now bring rest and peace. Eyes that are kept on Christ are corrected in their vision of life's challenges. 2/17/04 2/17/04
