Ready Psa 108:1 A David prayer. I'm ready, God, so ready, ready from head to toe. Ready to sing, ready to raise a God-song: (The Message) There is an opportunity for a heavenly encounter with the Father that is just waiting for an environment of praise and a spirit of faith. God is continually looking for someone to whom He may reveal Himself. How do we become this "someone" who is ready for the glory of God with a praise and a song? Is it somehow that by putting a praise on, doing a dance and lifting a shout that anyone can acquire and create this environment that will facilitate this visitation? David, in this 108th Psalm, is actually approaching God with a prayer for help, but, before he gets to any requests, there is this eruption of praise that comes pouring out of him. Instead of letting the image of the need dominate his thoughts and form his posture, there seems to be this opposite reaction that his need inspires. This wasn't the first time that David had been in need of a power and strength that went far beyond his own. He had experienced the anointing of God coming on him and empowering him to defeat the lion and the bear, the giant and countless prior enemies. God was so faithful in showing up to deliver that David knew He would show up again. There was this excitement and anticipation that rose up within Him as the vision of his victory became clear in his sights. He was ready to wake everyone up, run out in the streets and loudly proclaim the love and faithfulness of his God. He saw God as so much bigger than His situation that He not only covered it, but He went ahead and covered the whole earth with His glory. (verses 2-5) Then, from the heights of this praise, David made his request: Psa 108:6 And for the sake of the one you love so much, reach down and help me--answer me! And this is when the voice of God spoke to declare His purpose and intent. He made light of the enemies that seemed to be so formidable to David. He reassured that they were really nothing before Him and He made a challenge for someone to just take Him to the fight with them. In showing up even in this time of prayer, God was again demonstrating His faithfulness to respond to a readiness and demonstration of authentic praise. David could know that God would also show up on the field of battle as he carried that readiness of praise with him there. From this visitation, David was encouraged and strengthened, knowing that as he did his best with all his might that God would work through him to completely destroy his enemies. Psa 108:13 In God we'll do our very best; he'll flatten the opposition for good. While the words of praise in verses 2-5 can be repeated with great effect for us there is possibly a greater lesson to be learned in understanding the readiness of spirit that inspired those words. Through a developed relationship with a faithful God and through knowing the sweetness of trusting in Him continually, there is a readiness formed in the heart that cannot help but respond with praise. The melody and the lyrics can then be our very own as they are inspired by firsthand experience. The praise is not a method or means of getting, but a response to what has already been done and an anticipation of what will surely be done. The need only inspires thanks and praise in the heart of one who is made ready through relationship, and there is sure to be the desired visitation. 2/1/04
