Hold Peace Exo 14:13 And Moses said to the people, Do not fear. Stand still and see the salvation of Jehovah, which He will prepare for you this day. For the Egyptians whom you have seen today, you shall never see them anymore. Exo 14:14 Jehovah shall fight for you, and you shall be silent. (MKJV) There is such a natural compulsion to respond, when faced with a particularly large mountain or opposition with cries of despair and reasoning for return to the valley's comfort. Even though there is this incredible promise of victory and prosperity waiting on the other side, at times it may be beyond our capacity to comprehend or see it. We may have been presented with the assurance that everything is going to be all right and there may be a list of scriptures and books consumed in preparation for this challenge, but in the emergency of the moment we may find it impossible to control the content of our words. This may be a time when our natural physical response has not yet come to complete synchronization with the response of our spirit and negative words of defeat insist on being the words that will be heard. There may be a day coming when our ability to control these words is completely developed, but at this particular point in time it is found wanting. In the middle of this time we have a God who knows our frame and has provided yet a way for us to make it through again. When we have come to the end of our acting ability and faith does not seem to be within our grasp there is this provision of peace's place, where we can cease from any action at all and just stand still and see the salvation of the Lord. There may be a time for shouting in obedience before an insurmountable wall, there may be a time for commanding with a word of faith that rises from the heart, but there also may be a moment of silence that is required in order to just stand still and know that it is God's power alone that is doing the work. While this may not appear to be the dramatic act of "faith" that will somehow motivate God to work on our behalf, it may be the only act of faith that is possible and appropriate for this moment. Somehow in the simple ceasing from action and entering into complete rest there is a giving up of our responsibility for victory and an allowing God to take over and insure victory for us. There is great power within our words for good and for evil and this may be the time when the greatest contribution we could make to the battle is ceasing the flow of negativity. When what is seen with the natural eye is the inspiration and motivation for words formed, there may be a requirement of silence in order for what is seen to be changed from the status quo to the "salvation of Jehovah". We have a God who is completely and totally on our side, having done everything to provide for our success in every situation. All he asks is for us to be on His side, even if that just means closing our mouth and refusing to express a negative opinion. He has an ability to see beyond the natural circumstances to the greater reality of His provision and He wants to form that ability within us. As we learn to enter into faith's rest where every corresponding action will support His purpose this place of peace will always be rest's abode, where we are assured of seeing salvation. As there is a recognizing of the importance of what is said or not said and what is done or not done, however, there is something to be avoided in the tendency to become consumed with these things, thinking more about them than for Whom they are developed. The only true way to this place of peace where shouting, singing, speaking, giving and keeping silence are more than attempts at performing a method is when we are drawn by His goodness to the person of our God. His purpose is much greater than our victory of the moment. His purpose is our enhanced relationship with Him and learning to know what His true nature, power, and desire is. He is wanting to show himself strong in our life and He is wanting us to grow in ability to trust Him and to see through eyes of faith, but most of all He wants all this to take place as a result of an unquenchable thirst for more of Him and a passion that is gratified by His presence alone. For Him it is all about fellowship and relationship. As we stand still and our eyes are filled with a vision of salvation, may we be filled with an overwhelming desire to love, serve, live for and just be near the One who works all things together for our good. He is our peace and may our silence be flooded with His glory. Our lips form the expressions of the heart and fruit will be born by these expressions in every area of our life. 2/22/04
